Always wanted to learn how to knit? This four-week beginner series with instructor Teri Jaeger will take you from your very first stitch to completing your first knitting project!
Designed specifically for beginners, each session builds on the skills learned the week before. You'll learn how to choose yarn and needles, cast on, knit and purl, recognize stitches, read a simple pattern, correct common mistakes, and finish your work.
Along the way, you'll create practice swatches and begin a simple project such as a dishcloth, mug cozy, or basic scarf. Between sessions, you'll have simple practice assignments to help reinforce what you've learned.
By the end of the series, you'll have a strong foundation in knitting—and the confidence and resources to keep creating on your own!
SESSION 1
Getting Started with Knitting
Tuesday, October 6 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Get comfortable with the tools and terminology of knitting while exploring yarn types, weights and fibers; knitting needle sizes and styles; yarn labels; and the basics of gauge.
You'll learn how to make a slip knot, complete a long-tail cast-on, hold your needles and yarn, work the basic knit stitch, and begin developing even tension.
In Class: Cast on 20 stitches and knit several rows to create your first practice swatch.
At Home: Practice your new skills by knitting a garter stitch swatch approximately 4" x 4".
SESSION 2
Purl Stitch & Stitch Recognition
Tuesday, October 13 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Build on your new skills by learning the purl stitch and how to recognize the difference between knit and purl stitches. You'll also explore the anatomy of a stitch, right side vs. wrong side, basic stitch patterns, and common beginner mistakes.
You'll practice purling, switching between knit and purl stitches, and maintaining clean edge stitches.
In Class: Create a sampler featuring garter stitch, stockinette stitch, and 1x1 ribbing (K1, P1).
At Home: Complete your sampler and practice alternating knit and purl rows.
SESSION 3
Finishing Techniques & Reading Patterns
Tuesday, October 20 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Now it's time to put your growing skills to work! Learn how to follow a simple written knitting pattern, understand common abbreviations and pattern structure, and measure your work as you go.
You'll also learn a standard bind-off, how to weave in ends, and how to pick up dropped stitches for basic repairs.
In Class: Begin a simple beginner knitting project such as a dishcloth, mug cozy, or basic scarf.
At Home: Continue working on your project and bring it back for the final session.
SESSION 4
Completing Your First Project
Tuesday, October 27 | 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Bring everything you've learned together as you work toward completing your first knitting project! Teri will help you troubleshoot common issues, finish your piece, and build the confidence to continue knitting independently.
You'll learn basic blocking techniques, complete the final weaving in of ends, and have time to ask questions and share your finished—or nearly finished!—project with the group.
You'll also leave with helpful take-home resources, including a knitting terminology glossary, recommended beginner patterns, and online knitting resources to help you continue learning.
