The Great Mug Expedition

SPECIAL CLASS EXPEDITION

$20 / person

Thursday, August 27
5:30 - 7:30 pm

Embark on a creative journey into the world of ceramics!

During this unique, hands-on workshop, you'll explore the many ways a mug comes to life while rotating through four guided stations led by Olio's pottery instructors. Whether you've never touched clay before or have some experience, you'll leave with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every handmade mug.

Over the course of two hours, participants will travel through four 30-minute "stops" on the expedition:

🧭 Base Camp: Throwing on the Wheel

Watch a demonstration on the fundamentals of throwing a mug on the pottery wheel before taking your own turn at the wheel. Each participant will create one thrown mug body (without a handle) while learning the basics of wheel throwing.

🏕️ Trail Two: Handbuilding

Discover an entirely different approach to mug making by handbuilding your own mug. You'll learn construction techniques and create one handbuilt mug body (without a handle).

⛰️ Summit Station: Handle Making

A great mug deserves a great handle! Learn several techniques for creating comfortable, durable, and attractive handles before making two of your own.

🎨 Final Ascent: Glazing

Finish your expedition by exploring techniques for glazing pottery mugs. After watching instructor demonstrations, you'll glaze a mug that will become part of Olio's Art on Tap Mug Silent Auction.

Your Journey Makes a Difference

Rather than taking your mugs home, every mug created during this workshop will be donated to Olio's Art on Tap fundraiser this October. Your artwork will help support arts programming at Olio while becoming part of a one-of-a-kind silent auction featuring mugs created by community members and artists alike.

As a participant, you'll also be recognized as one of our featured ceramic artists. Your name will be included on the Art on Tap event website and displayed during the event alongside the other participating artists.

No experience is necessary. All materials, tools, clay, glazes, and firings are included.

Space is limited to just 16 participants, ensuring plenty of hands-on instruction and time with each instructor as you complete your Mug Expedition!
